Hello there!
The Chief's has taken to calling the new comer 'Donny' lately. Seems he likes the name. She's been trying out various other names - from Rusty (from his rustic colour), to Scruffy (he was rather Scruffy looking when he arrived) ... but he seems to like 'Donny' by the way he cocks his head everytime the humans at Dog Woods call 'Donny!'.
Scrawny Donny - look at all his ribs jutting out! He also has various callouses and minor wounds on his feet ...
So 'Donny' it is.
Today, someone (referred to as Person A) who works in one of the houses (referred to as House X) in the neighbourhood where (coincidently) Donny was found claimed that her employers have lost their German Shepherd. So the Chief and another one of Dog Woods household staff said Person A could come by to pick the dog up. When she didn't appear, the Chief and staff took Donny (we, TOP DOG, Anna and myself, Snoopy decided to tag along) by House X. But for some reason they refused to open the gates. Which was really odd...
These were the surrounding circumstances when Donny was found. He was found loitering nearby House X. The people living in the opposite house of House X who are Dog-Phobic were more than pleased when Donny followed the Chief home. According to them, he's been hanging around the area for the last few days and it was causing them a great deal of anxiety since they were terrified of him.
Which leads to another peculiarity. Won't a household be out looking for their lost dog? And if Donny was hanging around nearby House X won't Person A - who now claims Dog belongs to her or her employers and other members of the household staff would be out looking for him and would have found him by now?
From this Smart cookie's experience, when our Dog Woods TOP DOG there when missing one afternoon, everyone was frantically searching high and low within and around the neighbourhood of Dog Woods for his Lordship. Even the poo-lice was roped into looking for Tuffy.
Even the Chief's chanced upon him not once but twice (near House X too!) on two different days before deciding to do something about the strange German Shepherd lurking about the neighbourhood.
Which leads us Dog Woods canines to speculate:-
a) That Donny doesn't belong to that certain person who works with House X.
b) The Person A wants an pedigree dog like Donny for herself but is terrified of handling him - hence the no appearance after putting in claim and the not wanting to rescue him when he was initially lurking in front of their house ...
c) Ok, maybe this last speculation may be rather far fetched but a nice (but skinny) lost dog like Donny is the prime candidate for the cooking pot! This Basset Hound, kid you not ...roast dog is a delicacy in our part of the world. Though not a wide spread culinary practice compared to countries like Vietnam and the Philippines where you can buy yourself a slice of B-B-Q dog from the road side vendors or market, there are still people here who privately eat us. :P
So the Chief is wary. Poor Donny might end up in someone's dinner table if she's not careful. She's decided that she now wants documented and pictorial evidence ofDonny's ownership before letting him go with humans. As for now, the formal police report of a German Shepherd found has been lodged - just in case, Person A decides to accuse us at Dog Woods for holding what belongs to her or her employers (or whatever Person A's story is ...)
Snoopy signing off :)

Top Dog's acceptance : Tuffy and Donny
I am happy that he found such a good home to take care of him. Yes, there appears to be a mystery, but I like the idea that you will ask for photos before you turn him over.
ReplyDeleteNo microchip I suppose... sigh.
He might be from far away and somebody kicked him out of their car. It happens.
Slobbers,
Mango
Hello Mango!
ReplyDeleteYou're right. We suspect Donny is abandoned by his neglected looks.
And yes, since most ppl in our neck of the woods have at least a couple dogs running about in their yard they figured - this is the best place to kick him out. Poor Donny.
He's got separation anxiety problems. Whenever the Chief walks away to do something he'd start whining like he's afraid he's going to lose his human again.
Donny is so fortunate to have found your pack. If a dog goes missing here, the word gets out and all the neighbors are searching pronto. It seems weird that they would wait until you are working at getting the dog healthy again to lay claim to it.
ReplyDeleteOur parents have lived in countries where they eat dogs and Mom says it is not a pretty sight.

Donny is far to skinny to have been looked after wherevfur he came from. Your Chief is furry smart to want proof of his ownership :)
ReplyDeleteI hope he stays at Dog Woods. I think he would have the best home there :D
Big licks to you

Your Pack is smart to want proof of ownership. Here at our rescue, we require a home check among other things before releasing an animal to anyone, without a microchip or photograph, no evidence. He is lucky to have been found by you.

ReplyDeletePoor Donny. He is lucky to have found you. The picture of Donny and Tuffy is really cute, like they have been together for a long time.

Oh, we so don't even want to consider option 'c' - that is just so horrible. Donny looks like he really wants to be with all of you. And we bet it won't be too long before you can't call him Scrawny Donny:-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for being so nice to him.
Tail wags, the OP Pack

Wow...what strange circumstances. Your mom is smart to want proof before letting anyone take your new furry friend. :-)

I'm so glad Donny found you and is safe. I know the Chief will make sure he stays safe. He's a beautiful dog and deserves a good home with people who love him, he certainly doesn't deserve to be a main course.
ReplyDeleteDonny looks like a great dog. We are so pleased you are all looking after him. We were very nervous when reading about people eating dogs!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have heard of hot dogs of course and some people call us sausage dogs.......
We wish you all the best with Donny.

Aaww, poor Donny! He looks quite at home with you guys though :D and your rules for returning him to his 'owner' seem sensible and fair, we hope it's a happy ending!
ReplyDeleteTY for your congrats on Alfie's win, it was only an open show (no Crufts for us) but he got the last points he needed for his certificate at it. If you're interested his results and some photos are on Alfie's page here: http://dughallmorbeagles.blogspot.com/2008/09/alfie.html
Have a great weekend!

You deserve a big heart award for taking in Danny.

Oh, poor Scrawny Donny! He's a beautiful boy - I'm so glad that he is safe and being cared for now. He looks relieved to find himself safe. I hope that his story has a happy ending. Don't discount the possibility that he may be so skinny because he has been on his own for a long time and may have traveled. There may be an explanation other than neglect or abuse. Thanks for saving him!
